It's The Sound Of Music On Monterey Peninsula

Monterey Jazz Festival has a two-week summer jazz camp for middle and high school students, taking place at Monterey Peninsula College, June 10-21, 2013.

Students Get Ready To S-P-E-L-L

SALINAS, Calif.-  Students from schools throughout Monterey County will assemble at Hartnell College’s Western Stage Theatre on Sunday, March 17 to test their spelling knowledge.

In a news release, promoters said the students will attempt to spell their way to the grand prize of a trip to the Washington, D.C. area, to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 28 – 30, 2013. The competition promises to be fierce this year as the best middle school spellers in Monterey County compete at the 19th annual Countywide Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Monterey County Office of Education and community partners. Top honors will be awarded at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Largest Annual Science Fair For Students

More than 300 high school students are expected to attend the annual Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair this weekend. It's the largest high school participation of any fair in California.\

In a news release Wednesday, organizers said the Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair Competition will be held Friday, March 8; Saturday, March 9; and Sunday, March 10, 2013 at California State University Monterey Bay, University Center, Bldg. 29.

More than 590 students from middle schools and high schools throughout Monterey County will exhibit and present 405 science projects at this year’s Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair. More than half of the participants (351) are high school students, representing the largest high school student participation of any science fair in California.

Monterey County Organization Reaches Milestone

It's a new year and 2013 marks the 45th Anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County.

In a news release, staff said it's an incredible testimony to the vision and commitment of this community to serve children.


The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County started out in a small house in 1968 with just 10 kids. Now, after 45 years of service, it's bigger and better than ever.

There are two clubhouses and three extension sites serving almost 1,000 kids daily, more children than ever are benefitting from having a safe haven where they can learn, grow and have fun.
