Hispanic Women Less Likely to get Mammograms

About 207,040 women in the U.S will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the end of the year. About 20% of them will be Hispanic and doctors say the problem is getting them into the doctor's office.

"Only 23 percent of breast cancers in Hispanic women are even found by a doctor," said Dr. Susan Roux. She also said woman are less likely to get a mammogram because they're uneducated about the disease and don't have the time to take care of themselves.

"So many women are working so hard and taking care of their kids and making sure everybody is healthy, they're last on the list."

"Last on the list" that means it's often too late when Hispanic women find out they have cancer. Dr. Roux says they don't seek medical care and seem to have a poor understanding of the disease.

Dr. Roux went over a mammogram which shows the sooner breast cancer is detected the more likely women will survive.
