Rental Scam Involving Empty Homes In Monterey | Crime

MONTEREY - Monterey Police want you to be aware of a report of a rental scam happening in the area.
The scam involves empty houses often for sale that are being used in ads for house rentals.
Police said clients are speaking with people they believe are the owners of the "rental" property via e-mail.
"The alleged owners are generally out of the state or country and are handling the rental remotely or through third party, who is also not available to meet with the prospective clients. Money is requested via a wire transfer and once received, the keys are never delivered and the 'owner' cannot be found," according to Monterey Police.
Police said they find the property in question was never advertised for rent and the owner or realtor had no idea what was going on.
