Authorities Stepping Up Security For Big Sur Marathon

BIG SUR, Calif.- Local law enforcement agencies want to assure the public that safety is their top priority at the Big Sur International Marathon in the wake of the Boston Marathon tragedy.

The California Highway Patrol is working with the Big Sur International Marathon and several other agencies including the California Emergency Management Agency, Cal Fire, Monterey County Sheriff's Office, Monterey Police Department, Sand City Police Department, and Monterey Peninsula Airport Fire Department. CHP said they are providing maximum security for this weekend's event.

"The collaborative goal is to ensure the marathon is a safe, fun, enjoyable event for spectators and participants alike," said Monterey County Sheriff Scott Miller in a CHP news release.

High School Student Arrested for Making Online Threats

MONTEREY, Calif. -  A Monterey High School student has been arrested and released, after allegations of threats being made to other students via social media. The initial information led Detectives to believe that the juvenile suspect was in violation of the threats statute.

The juvenile was arrested Wednesday morning, outside a Seaside home.

Following an intensive investigation, the juvenile has been released without charges, although the investigation will be forwarded to the Juvenile Probation Department for their review. The Monterey Police Department and school officials worked together to ensure that students were safe and that the proper intervention occurred.

This case serves as an important example of the need to contact law enforcement when worrisome statements about the health and safety of others become known.

Peninsula Task Force Fights Gangs and Drugs

CARMEL, Calif.-   Brand new drugs as strong as meth, smuggled from across the world, are now cropping up on the Central Coast.  We told you about the big khat bust earlier this month in Seaside.

It's new discoveries like that one, making police departments on the Monterey Peninsula form a team, to keep up with the criminals and their new games.  On Thursday we learned, cities are doing it for cheap.

PRVNT, in other words "prevent".  That acronym is important because the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team is all about staying ahead of the bad guys.  But they'll have to do it smartly this time.  That's because in 2009, Peninsula police departments lost their joint task force coverage with Salinas and the rest of the county after state budget cuts.
