Light rail Causing Slight Drama on the Peninsula

Submitted by kiki jones on Wednesday, August 4th, 1:02 pm

It would be a new way for commuters to get around the Monterey peninsula.

A lightrail slowly moving through town and one city councilmember is speaking up for her community's concerns.

Keeping Window on the Bay open with unobstructed views have been a life long project for a lot of people in Monterey, and now some say that a light rail project that's also been in the works for a long time threatens its very existence and also costs way too much money.

"We have worked for many years to get window on the bay what it is and we are very proud of it and they're saying why would we have a light rail coming down every 15 minutes during peak time and every 30 minutes after that?" said city council member Nancy Selfridge is listening to her constituents.  And people as far away as New York are even getting involved.

They're concerned a lightrail like this would ruin window on the bay park.  But the Transportation Agency of Monterey County says i

No Cell Phones While Biking

Submitted by kiki jones on Friday, April 9th, 3:10 pm

The Central Coast boasts some of the most beautiful biking trails around, but it's cyclists on the roadways that has legislators worried.

A new bill written by the same guy who banned cell phones while driving, is now cracking down on bicylists.

"How often am I on the phone? A lot, a lot."

But for Ron Johnson and Trevor Pilling-Miller they're already ahead of the curve, they say hands-free on two wheels is the way to go.

"Just press the button when the phone rings and you answer it," said Johnson.

"It's safe you can still have control of your bike and be looking around, actually holding your cell that's a distraction it's going to cause you to wipe it pretty bad or hit somebody else," said Pilling-Miller.

The bill would not only make it illegal to use a phone while riding a bike, but it would also increase the fines for drivers who still talk or text behind the wheel, and that's music to cyclists ears.

"I see them bei

Calif bill boosts fines for illegal cell phone use (The Californian)

Submitted by admin
Tuesday, April 6th, 9:10 am

Cell phones are causing fewer accidents since California outlawed the use of handheld devices behind the wheel, but the senator be-hind the law says too many people are still driving distracted.

A bill by Sen. Joe Simitian would create a bigger deterrent to keep drivers from texting or using a cell phone without a handsfree device.

MST Using Twitter to Deliver Service

Submitted by Matt Stein on Saturday, December 19th, 11:09 pm

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) is utilizing the popular social networking site to deliver real-time service alerts to passengers. Tweets will include important information about late trips on many commuter routes and all cancelled trips that may result from severe traffic congestion, roadwork, mechanical problems, or other emergency situations that may block area roadways.

"New technologies, including Wi-Fi enabled buses, Google Transit trip planning, and real-time bus arrival signage at our transit centers, have proven useful to our customers and now MST is excited to be able to utilize Twitter to deliver real-time information to passengers waiting at any of our bus stops in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Santa Clara counties," said MST General Manger and CEO Carl Sedoryk.

View MST's service alerts on Twitter by simply visiting www.twitter.com/mst_bus.

Duck Crossing on Del Monte Avenue

Submitted by Paul
Sunday, December 13th, 6:42 pm

Traffic stopped in both directions on Del Monte Avenue in Monterey for about 10 minutes on Sunday while a couple of ducks took their time crossing the street.

It's not the first time I've been stuck while the ducks from the pond near Dennis the Menace park decided to relocate, but the first time I've seen it on Del Monte.

Rapid Light Rail Transist From Peninsula to Castroville

Submitted by David Wen on Monday, November 9th, 1:21 pm

According to Don Bachman, Deputy Executive Director of the T.A.M.C., the first phase of the light rail system would run along the old railroad route, starting in North Marina and ending up at Monterey's Portola Plaza. The old railroad was owned by Union Pacific Railroad before the T.A.M.C. purchased a portion of it in 2003.

In an effort to reduce traffic on Highway 1, there is a proposed project to operate six trains running every 15 to 30 minutes between Monterey's Portola Plaza and Marina Green.  The line will eventually be streched to Castroville.
