A Walk To Living Life

The heartache and shock of losing a loved one to suicide changes a person forever. That's why the Suicide Prevention Service on the Central Coast is trying to reach out to the thousands of people who might need help. They deal with anyone coping with a family member's death to counseling depressed individuals.

One day a year, The Suicide Prevention Service takes time to encourage people to walk for awareness. The Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast is holding their 4th annual Coast Trail Walk Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day.

"It's a time to come together, honor the memory of those we've lost and celebrate life as we promote a safe community," according to a recent news release.

The Coastal Trail Walk will take place at Window on the Bay park in Monterey on Del Monte Avenue. The walk will follow the coastal trail toward Pacific Grove.

Patrick Dempsey Back to Racing at Laguna Seca

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has announced that Patrick Dempsey, the famous television and movie actor, turned race car driver, is scheduled to drive the Mazda RX-792P GTP car at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

It's happening this weekend, August 13th, 14th & 15th.

Jorge Lorenzo Wins MotoGP World Championship

Jorge Lorenzo extended his lead at the top of the championship standings to 72 points after winning the MotoGP World Championship.

The spaniard capitalized on an error by his closest rival Dani Pedrosa, who was out in front when he crashed out at turn five with 21 laps to go. Yamaha's Lorenzo cruised to the win once he had clear track ahead of him.

Casey Stoner came second and Valentino Rossi achieved a superb third place in only his second race since returning after six weeks out with a broken leg.

The victory was Lorenzo's fourth in the last five races.

Rossi Confirmed for Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix

Fiat rider, Valentino Rossi is officially entered to ride in the sixth annual Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca July 23-25.

Rossi had a serious accident in Italy six weeks ago.

Gill Campbell, CEO at Mazda Raceway says, "It is like Christmas to hear that he will be once again challenging the Corkscrew this year.  We are thrilled for him."

Rossi won the race in 2008, defeating Casey Stoner.

Students will Launch 14ft-tall Rockets this Weekend!

Three teams of NPS GSEAS will launch their two-stage 14ft-tall, solid-engine rockets on Saturday, July 17th in Mojave,CA. 

The launch which was organized by the American Institute, is part of a two-day, regional competition  of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

This is the second year the students are participating in the rocket launch, after winning the competition last year.The competition is open to the public and if you would like to watch the rocket launch you can get more information from the web site below.

This project is led by Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Prof. Oleg Yakimenko.

Summer Swim Lessons at Monterey Sports Center

Ages: 6 month to adult.

Two week sessions begin Monday, June 7th.  Mondays through Thursdays: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Location: Monterey Sports Center, 301 East Franklin Street.  Call 831-646-3730 for more information.

Fees: Group lessons are $42 (City resident) and $47 (non-City resident).

Special Olympics of Monterey County

On Friday April 23, the Special Olympics of Northern California will hold its annual Monterey County Special Olympics event at the North Salinas High School’s Track & Field facility, located at 55 Kip Drive in Salinas.
 
Opening Ceremonies begin at 9:00 a.m. with competition starting at 10:00 a.m.

Over 650 hugely enthusiastic students, ages 6-22, from 30 Monterey County schools will be participating in various events, including running, baseball throw, turbo jay, shot-put and standing long jump. There will also be wheelchair events - manual, motorized and assisted.

Monterey Native Wins Historic Olympic Medal

Monterey-born J.R. Celski joined Apolo Anton Ohno on a medal stand for short track speed skating, a first in American Olympic history.

Celski took the bronze medal and Ohno won silver in the men's 1,500 final Saturday night; a last-second crash by their South Korean competitors vaulted Celski to the podium finish.

Celski is competing in his first meet since a crash in the U.S. Trials last September.
