California is finalist for education reform grants

Submitted by Elvia on Tuesday, July 27th, 1:08 pm

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California is among 18 states and the District of Columbia that are finalists in the second round of the federal "Race to the Top" school reform grant competition.

U.S. Department of Education officials provided The Associated Press with a list of the finalists on Tuesday ahead of a speech by Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

California will have a chance to win as much as $700 million in the national competition, which rewards ambitious reforms aimed at improving struggling schools and closing the achievement gap. The U.S. Education Department is expected to announce the winners of the second phase in September.

Two states, Tennessee and Delaware, were awarded a total of $600 million in the first round.

Bay View Elementary School to Close

Submitted by kiki jones on Monday, December 14th, 9:52 am

Late Thursday night, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District approved plans to close Bay View Elementary School.  It will close after the 2010-2011 school year.

The district will send students from Bay View and kindergarten to fifth graders from Colton Elementary to the new Monte Vista school. The plan keeps Colton a middle school .

The district said it needs to make the change because of budget cuts and so all schools have the same grade standards.  Board leaders said Bay View isn't big enough to hold more students once schools are reconfigured.

The Superintendent said it will cost the district $10,000 to move and an extra $95,000 to make upgrades to Monte Vista school.
