Doris Day foundation designates programs to aid SPCA for Monterey County

Submitted by Elvia on Friday, July 30th, 4:55 pm

According to the Salinas Californian, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, a national nonprofit organization founded by the actress and animal welfare advocate, is providing help for a rescued horse and creating the Duffy Day Lifesaving Program at The SPCA for Monterey County, providing emergency care to special pets in need of major medical care.

Day was inspired to contact The SPCA after watching local news coverage about Mocha, an emaciated horse rescued by SPCA humane officers in December 2009.

Abandoned Puppies Reminds Central Coast to Surrender Animals

Submitted by Elvia on Wednesday, June 16th, 6:06 pm

MONTEREY, Calif.- "They're going to have a really happy outcome with a tough beginning," said SPCA executive director Gary Tiscornia.

"They are thriving right now, they're hydrated, they're active, and they're cute as the devil," said Tiscornia.

On Friday, the four female chihuahuas' future was more than uncertain, more bleak than anything, when someone abandoned the five week old puppies on the side of the road on Blanco Cirlce.

"When we got the puppies they were dehydrated and lethargic...too young to be away from their mother."

They were found by a dental hygentist in a tupperware container like this with a blanket and no top in a very populated area.  As far as abandonments go, the SPCA says this wasn't the worst.

"If you're abandoning animals because you don't care about them you dump them in a field somewhere...Clearly the person wanted them to be found," said Tiscornia.

Regardless, it's st

City Receives a Large Mutt Mitt Donation

Submitted by Marc Cota-Robles
Wednesday, June 2nd, 9:23 am

In an effort to keep Monterey's parks and beaches clean of doggy waste, a Seattle-based company Wet Noses has made a big donation to the City of Monterey.  The dog treat company will donate approximately 5,000 Mutt Mitts.

About 122,000 are used each year by area dog owners.

It's usually a big cost.  Restocking the 18 Mutt Mitt stations around Monterey costs the City $6,000 each year.

Moving forward, the City of Monterey is beginning their Adopt-a-Mutt-Mitt-Station program.  For more info, call 831-915-8250.

Michael Vick Dog Dies of Cancer

Submitted by kiki jones on Tuesday, April 6th, 1:55 pm

An eight-year-old pit bull named Red, who was once a part of Michael Vick's infamous dogfighting kennels has died after a short battle with cancer.

Red, an eight year old pit bull arrived at the Monterey County SPCA with scars on his face and chest.  Though he had a violent past, Red filled a vital role by helping SPCA Pet Behavior Specialist Amanda Mouisset with her behavior consultations.

Red was trained to fight other dogs but he found his calling helping to calm aggresive dogs. True to his gentle nature, Red would sit relaxed in the training area, serving as a calming agent while Mouisset and her client eased the other dog's aggression by redirecting focus and energy.

Red shared a home with Mouisset, her husband, two children, two dogs, and a cat.  He went from Vick's fighting kennels to playing with other dogs, cuddling on the couch, and letting kids play dress up with him as their willing model.

Last week, Red was
