Monterey Parks Divison's 54th Annual Cutting Day and Horticulture Faire will be held on Saturday, March 20.  You can check it out from 9:00am - 12:00pm, in Friendly Plaza.

Residents are asked to bring their plants and cuttings to the drop off point on Pierce Street.

In addition to the expected bounty of cuttings, this year's event will include displays on drought tolerant plants, bonsais, and drip irrigation.

Plastic pots will be collected for recycling.  There will also be free advice from garden experts.

WATER ALERT: Bills Could Increase for Customers Who Waste

Submitted by Marc Cota-Robles
Friday, February 12th, 10:04 am

Check the mailbox! Cal-Am water users on the Monterey Peninsula are getting word that new water rates are being implemented this month.  The rates were approved by the California Public Utilities Commission.

The rate change will reward those customers who save.

While the average customer (consumes 70 gallons per day) will see little-to-no change in their bills, large users (or abusers) could see their water bills double, or even triple in price.

According to Cal-Am General Manager Craig Anthony, water users in Monterey "use less water on average than anywhere in the state."

Tree Cutting Now Comes With Big Fines

Submitted by kiki jones on Thursday, December 17th, 3:39 pm

Many have faced the dilemma where the house you're shopping for has it
all except one big set back. It's a big tree that covers the views, it

"That's one of the reasons why the city council chose to enact a private tree regulation was to protect those trees from being destroyed or mutilated simply for the purpose of enhancing views or property values," says Monterey forester Robert Reid.

Reid has been a forester for the city of Monterey since 1986 and says in the early 1990's a law was enacted to make it illegal to remove trees without a permit even from private properties. But the new ordinance enacted on Tuesday adds a bit more. "We are also now able to impose penalties for trees that are irreversibly damaged topped our mutilated under private or city property."

He says during winter storms, such as the one's we've experienced recently.

Submitted by kiki jones on Wednesday, December 16th, 1:42 pm

Some cities on the peninsula are a step closer to something that's been talked about for decades, combining fire departments. It's part of a plan for cities across the peninsula to save money.

Monterey Fire Chief Sam Mazza says the merger has gone exceptionally well by providing better service to both cities.

"We believe we are better prepared and poised now to provide enhanced services for both the community and residents of Monterey and Pacific Grove with increased depth and operational integration," says Chief Sam Mazza.

It's been one year since the merger, and now the Monterey and Pacific Grove Fire Departments want to be a model to other cities and fire agencies on the peninsula. Monterey Fire Chief Sam Mazza says the merger has gone exceptionally well by providing better service to both cities.

Wednesday, the city of Monterey approved to seriously look at joint operations with the City of Marina.
