3 Burglars Behind Bars

Three suspects are behind bars at Monterey County Jail for residential burglaries in Monterey.

The first happened on Via Gayuba on July 16th.  Credit cards were taken and jewelry totaling more than $3,100. 

On July 18, another burglary on the 1000 block of Roosevelt.  More than $12,000 of electronics and jewelry was taken. 

On July 19, In a joint effort between Marina & Monterey Police, 24 year old Dennis Albert Jones of Marina was arrested.  He was traced to the stolen credit cards. 

The two other suspects were arrested on July 20th, while attempting to burglarize a home on the 500 block of Scott Street in Monterey.  They were identified as 22 year old Nicholas Charles Howder of Monterey and 32 year old Raven Michelle Hatcher of Prunedale.

All 3 face multiple charges.

Possible Purchase of Four Ford Crown Victorias

At Tuesday night's city council meeting, it's being recommended that the Monterey City Council pass a resolution authorizing the purchase of four new Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. 

According to city policy, vehicles are replaced when they are worn out and no longer economical to operate or maintain. This process usually happens every 4 years or 100,000 miles. The total cost is $110,633.06. 

They were competitively bid using the California Multiple Award Schedule (CMAS) through Downtown Ford of Sacramento.

The new 2009 vehicles are compatible with E85 flex fuel blend... which is a low emission alternative fuel.

In-Car Cameras for Monterey Police Cruisers

Discussion is underway to purchase police dashboard cameras in the City of Monterey.  The City Council may pass a resolution to authorize the Police Department to apply for federal grant funds from the 2010 Annual Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program.  $18,589 is available from the grant. 

Police plan to purchase and install in-car video equipment for their marked police vehicles.  The entire project will cost at least $110,626... all of which has been raised through JAG funds. 

Over the past decade, Monterey Police have successfully obtained $360,000 in JAG funding for several projects.

Monterey City Council meets Tuesday night, July 20th at City Hall on Pacific Avenue.

Multiple Drug-Related Arrests

The Monterey Police Department, Seaside Police Department, the Monterey County District Attorney's Office and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) have announced the arrest of 20 people in connection to a month-long investigation into illegal narcotics sales to active duty naval personnel in Monterey.

NCIS routinely works with state, local and other federal agencies to deter the illegal distribution of drugs to Department of Navy members.

Authorities seized: Marijuana, Psilocybin Mushrooms, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, powder Ecstasy, Ecstasy pills and Oxycontin pills.  

DLI says active Naval members who tested positive for illegal drugs will face disciplinary actions.

Third Round for Peninsula Cold Case Project

26 YEARS LATER: Another case is being revisited by Monterey Peninsula Police agencies in their search for a suspect and the victim. 

On 12/16/1983, Sandra McGee was reported missing by her family.  She was last seen by her brother in Seaside seven days earlier.  She was in a borrowed vehicle, that was later reported stolen... and was in the company of an unknown man.

The car was later found abandoned in the Monterey Hyatt parking lot.  Police are still looking for leads and information, to move the case forward.

Suspect Arrested for May 13th Shooting on Fremont

On Thursday, May 20th, Monterey Police arrested 20 year old Roman Santiago Trinidad of Seaside in connection to a recent shooting on Fremont Street.

That shooting occurred on May 13th.  A man was shot multiple times and was flown to a Bay Area hospital for treatment and is currently recuperating.

Trinidad was arrested at Cutino Park without incident.  Police say the shooting is believed to be gang related.  Trinidad is being held on attempted murder and gang enhancement charges.

Shooting on Fremont Street

A 21-year-old man was shot in Monterey on Thursday night and life-flighted to a Bay Area Hospital.

Monterey Police say the man was shot 3 times around 9:30 p.m. outside the Quick Stop on Fremont Street.

Officers spent about an hour and a half speaking with witnesses.  Some people say the gunshots sounded like small fireworks. 

No arrests have been made.  There's no word on the victims condition.

ARREST: Felon Behind Bars on Multiple Charges

On Thursday, May 6th, the Monterey Peninsula Regional Special Response Unit (SRU) assisted Monterey Police detectives to serve a search warrant at 304 Carmel Avenue in Marina.

Monterey Police learned that 53 year old Remigio Manio Merilos was involved in criminal activity, including the possession of weapons.

They found several firearms and a stolen shotgun.  Other items recovered include nun-chucks, batons, and two homemade explosive devices.  The Monterey County Sheriff's bomb squad was called in to help.

Merilos was taken to County Jail.  His bail was set at $50,000.

Student Recovering After Stabbing at Monterey High School

A 14 year old boy is recovering after being stabbed on May 5th, in front of Monterey High School.  It happened as he was walking with a group of friends after school ended.

The suspect, also 14, came up behind the victim and stabbed him with a knife.  He ran off and later turned himself in at the School's administrative office.

He was arrested and taken to Juvenile Hall in Salinas.

The motive was not clear.

Peninsula Cold Case Project Focuses on New Cases

Detectives with the Peninsula Cold Case Project have been working on two cases over the last month: the 1969 murder of Christian Lopes and the 1995 murder of james Finnegan. 

The following cases are now being revisited:

Pacific Grove PD: 1995 murder of Richard Coleman, a 29 year old man from Pacific Grove, who was found beaten and strangled to death in his Grand Avenue apartment.

Monterey PD: 1984 murder of Diane Fox, a 24 year old woman, who was found on Lapis Road near Marina.  She had been stabbed and beaten... and was reported missing from her Monterey residence two days earlier.
