Security Measures Examined For Big Sur Marathon

CARMEL, Calif.-  After Monday's tragedy in Boston, at one of the world's most famous foot races, the organizers of similar large events are taking a hard look at their own security measures including here on the Central Coast.

In Carmel, about 10,000 runners will cross the finish line for the Big Sur Internation Marathon in less than two weeks.  We found out several local race directors were in Boston, some helping with the Boston Marathon and some were running.  We've been told all of them are safe and they plan to ease any concerns for runners.

"We had never thought that a marathon could be a potential target.  Now here at the sheriff's office, anytime you get a large group of individuals together at an international event, that you're a potential target," said Monterey County Sheriff's Department Chief of Operations Chuck Monarque.

Monterey Business May Sue MST Over Lost Dollars

Monterey Business May Sue MST Over Lost Dollars

MONTEREY, Calif. -- The construction is complete in the new Monterey Business District, but a sign is catching some attention.

Salvatore Carbone has owned Carbone's Bar in Monterey for seven years and said he's never had any problems until now.

"With MST coming in and putting that bus stop, it devastated us. It was a project put together without thought," he said.

Monterey-Salinas Transit began construction on the new Jazz line last June and for several months it closed lanes on Lighthouse Avenue. Carbone said it was a nightmare for his customers.
