Dear Jon - Who Adjusts My Neighborhood Traffic Signal That's Out of Sync?

Dear Jon - Who Adjusts My Neighborhood Traffic Signal That's Out of Sync?

By Jon K. Brent - email

Dear Jon - Ever wonder who fixes those traffic signals that take forever? I have the answer for you! Each city has their public works department and they typically have traffic signal engineers and staff that work to keep the traffic signals in sync. But that's not always the case.

Sometimes a city will contract that work out if they've had to cut their budgets, or they may contract for after hours work. If it's a state highway that runs through a community, Cal Trans typically will handle those traffic signals.

Local Woman of The Year Named

Local Woman of The Year Named

Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula (MOWMP) named Dorothy Maras-Ildiz, a long-time supporter and volunteer as their Woman of the Year.

Ms. Maras-Ildiz will be honored at the 6th annual Women Who Care (and the men who love them) luncheon on Sunday, June 2nd at the Monterey Marriott.

Maras-Ildiz has a long history of volunteerism and a celebrated career in hospitality. Dorothy owned her first restaurant in Sacramento at the age of 19. Working in the downtown area she came across many homeless and hungry people and never hesitated to feed whoever came to the back door looking for something to eat.

“Witnessing the volume of food that went into the garbage cans, it didn’t make sense to me, not to feed those in need.” said Maras in a news release last week.

Currently Dorothy serves as the culinary liaison Coastal Luxury Management which produces The Pebble Beach Food & Wine event and the Los Angeles Food & Wine event.

City Leaders to Tackle Homeless Issue in Monterey

By Brett Martin - email

MONTEREY, Calif. - Homeless issues have been surrounding the city of Monterey for years at some of their top tourist destinations. People visiting downtown Monterey can see some playing instruments but others are faced with aggressive panhandling.

Last week, city staff presented solutions to the issues to city council.

"They did ask city staff to come back with some recommendations on expanding no smoking areas in the city and expanding no overnight parking areas in commercial zones in Monterey," said Kim Bui-Burton, community services and library director.
